One man was killed and 10 people were injured after a van ploughed into worshippers leaving the Muslim Welfare House in the Finsbury Park mosque shortly after midnight.

Many expressed similar sentiments, claiming that officials and local media had been slower to label the incident terrorism in comparison to recent attacks.

The 48-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and is now in police custody.

"This is being treated as a terrorist incident and is being investigated by the counter-terrorism command".

He said: 'I'm a Muslim - I'm a little bit scared myself walking the streets with my little girl because I know anything can happen. A local imam, Mohammed Mahmoud, organized some "brothers" and shielded the man until police could take him away.

"I saw a man underneath the van".

Van appears to be a hire vehicle from a company in Wales.

Police said eight of the injured were taken to three hospitals and two suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The threat from extreme right-wing groups has been growing in recent years, he said, noting that 16% of all terror arrests in the year to March were classed as "domestic extremism".

A man reacts after the attack near a mosque in London's Finsbury Park neighborhood early Monday.

The association quoted the Prime Minister saying: "I will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene", she said in a statement on Monday.

Authorities had also warned of an increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes across London after the London Bridge attack on June 3.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge, it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", Khan said.

The use of a vehicle to mow down pedestrians drew horrifying parallels with the June 3 attack, when three men drove a van into pedestrians before embarking on a stabbing spree, and with another auto and knife rampage in Westminster in March.

Rudd, who is in charge for government law enforcement, said: "Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have been nothing short of heroic." she said Monday.

Basu said officers in the immediate vicinity responded to the attack while additional support arrived within 10 minutes of the call.

"Just after 00:20 BST, the Metropolitan Police received reports that a van had been driven into a crowd of people on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park".

According to the Associated Press, a mob surrounded the suspect and witnesses said the crowd began attacking him. This incident shows there are bad people trying to divide us.

Ratib Al-Sulaman was sitting two minutes away when the incident occurred.

"There was big fear around this particular mosque in the past and it's really good to hear what they're doing and to meet people one on one", she told AFP at the time.

"When he was running he was saying "I wanna kill more people, I wanna kill more Muslims", he told BBC TV.

"He said, 'I'd do it again, '" Rana told The Washington Post.

"Then we managed to get him on the floor".

Harun Khan, the secretary general of the MCB, said: "During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship".

The attacker struck as the area was busy with worshippers who had been attending Ramadan night prayers at the mosque. "Mosque safety needs to be stepped up and this includes entry and exit points", it said in a statement.

Cllr Richard Watts, left, with mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn in Finsbury Park this afternoon.

On 22 May a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England. "This was an attack on London and all Londoners". Islamist extremists, motivated by a twisted vision of religion, seem also to have a shared conviction in an armed struggle - albeit one which is framed as a clash of civilisations.

The attack laid bare the frustrations of Muslims who feel they've been unfairly equated with the extremists who carry out atrocities in the name of Islam.
