The number of people displaced a year ago was 300,000 higher than in 2015.

The conflict in Syria alone has displaced 12 million people overall, meaning that 65% of the country's whole population are either internally displaced or have become refugees outside the country.

About half of the refugee population last year were children younger than 18 years of age, according the report. Germany, which received 722,400 asylum claims, was the largest recipient of new applications, followed by the US, Italy and Turkey.

The number of people forced to flee has increased with more than 50% over the last five years, up from 42.3 million in 2012.

At the end of 2016, there were about 40.3 million internally displaced people in the world, down slightly from 40.8 million a year earlier, with Syria, Iraq and Colombia accounting for the greatest numbers. There were another 2.8 million asylum seekers, the report said. The total refugee population - people who fled their home countries - was about 22.5 million people, and almost half of those were children. "Borders must be kept open, but we can not expect a country like Uganda to shoulder the entire bill", said Egeland.

Of the 65.6 million displaced people in the world, 10.3 million had become displaced in 2016.

The UN refugee chief meanwhile voiced most alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation in South Sudan, which he said was now the world's "fastest growing refugee crisis and displacement crisis". This group, which was mostly children, grew by 64% during the second half of 2016, from 854,100 to more than 1.4 million.

The UNHCR said it hoped Monday's record breaking numbers would encourage wealthy countries to think again: Not just to accept more refugees, but to invest in peace promotion, and reconstruction.

Going by UNHCR data, the population of refugees, also called people of concern, is about 2.08 lakh in India.

The fastest growing refugee population was spurred by the crisis in South Sudan while almost two-thirds of Syrians have been forced to flee their homes.

The global body, in a statement, said nations must "share the responsibility for protecting refugees, assisting host communities and providing robust support". "That's the primary reason why ourselves and our partners have been trying to shift the worldwide focus towards supporting those host countries".

During a year ago, 10.3 million people were newly displaced by conflict or persecution, creating 20 new displacements worldwide every minute.

According to the report, 84 percent of the world's 22.5 million refugees were in low or middle income countries, with a third in the world's least developed nations.
