Judge declares mistrial in Cosby sexual-assault case

Cosby's trial started June 5 in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

The lawyer said that Cosby's ailing health-he is legally blind and uses a cane-made the trial hard to endure. None of the jurors commented after the trial ended and headed home to the Pittsburgh area, some 300 miles (483 kilometers) from the courthouse outside Philadelphia.

Prior to releasing the jurors, O'Neill strongly recommended that they keep the details of their deliberations secret.

"She's a very spiritual woman, she believes things happen for a objective, and I think the goal is.it should encourage other women to come forward and have their day in court", said her lawyer, Dolores Troiani. The defense had hoped, if it did, to introduce evidence she had previously dated a man. Spokeswoman for Cosby's wife, Camille said.

Throughout the entire trial, over 60 women viewed Constand as their intermediary. Though Cosby has strongly denied the allegations against him, the treatment his accusers have faced show, as Salon noted, that "rape culture has not yet been conquered".

Attorney Eli Segal of Pepper Hamilton LLP, representing the media organizations, argued that the names of jurors is of "extraordinary public importance" and that news outlets have a First Amendment right to it. Once the court declared the mistrial, O'Neill told the jurors, "Do not in any way feel you have let the justice system down", even as the term "mistrial", itself, suggests a process that suffered some critical malfunction.

The jurors clearly struggled with their verdict, telling Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday they were at impasse.

Criminal law professor Jody Armour wonders if the bitter divide over social issues that is evident in American politics was at work in the jury room. Guilty or not, this is the beginning for a lot of us.

The case stemmed from an alleged 2004 encounter in which, Constand said, Cosby drugged and assaulted while her she was an employee at Temple University, his alma mater.

They deliberated for 52 hours over six days. "It's an old case, it's a controversial case, it's a case that involves questions of consent", said Loyola Law School professor Laurie Levenson.

"I would say [the alternates] would have voted to convict, but that's exclusively based on what I think, because literally when we're sitting in this room as the six alternates, we weren't allowed to talk about the trial", McCloskey told the station. Cosby's legal team painted Constand as someone who could not be believed. He said everything that happened was consensual. "They want the element of surprise".

Janice Dickinson, the former fashion model and actress, has also filed a defamation suit against Cosby in California.

Under questioning from her lawyer, Cosby acknowledged that he had obtained several prescriptions for quaaludes in the 1970s for the objective of offering the powerful sedative to women he wanted to have sex with. With the jury remaining undecided; the trial then turned into a mistrial in which it was dismissed by the court.

Publicist Andrew Wyatt raised a clenched fist as he led the legally blind Cosby out of the courthouse after the jury deadlocked Saturday, while cameras popped and his lead defense lawyer walked away.

Cosby remains free on bail.
