Donald Trump Gives Karen Handel A Last-Minute Plug In Georgia Runoff

Handel, Ossoff call on help in final days of Georgia race

The race pits Republican Karen Handel, a 55-year-old former secretary of state, against Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old filmmaker.

The reality, says Ossoff backer Dodoo Saakwa-Mante, is that no one knows who'll win or what it actually means for Washington. But Republicans in Georgia are seeking to exploit the shooting to gain an advantage in this week's special Congressional election.

On Saturday, Handel campaigned with Price and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, a former Georgia governor. "And with a commitment to working across the aisle to get things done, to holding people in Washington accountable regardless of their political party, some fresh leaders can hopefully break through some of this nonsense".

Handel has received support from many top Republicans. Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and was an outspoken critic of Republican policy on social media (Sanders has strongly condemned the shooting). The Georgia election has drawn national interest and has already become the most expensive U.S. House race ever.

"The strategy for this campaign has always been about who is best and the right fit for people of this district", Handel said on Monday. The district is traditionally Republican, but Trump only narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton in November, giving hope to the Democrats that, with the president's low approval ratings, they can flip the district.

Handel faces Democrat Jon Ossoff in a nationally watched matchup that Democrats want to turn into a referendum on Trump. If Handel loses, it will be a warning sign to House Republicans facing tough races in other suburban districts around the country, many of them among the 23 GOP-held seats where Trump trailed Clinton in 2016. And the attention is all the more intense given Republicans held on to House seats in Montana and Kansas earlier this spring and are expected to hold a SC seat on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday is a race in SC, which Republicans are expected to win handily, for a replacement for Republican Mick Mulvaney, now Trump's budget director.

Both Handel and Ossoff have full schedules of events around the district on Monday and are trying to avoid talk about the national attention and money spent on the race.
