France's Macron to reshuffle government after parliament win

A coalition formed of Macron's Republic on the Move party and the older centrist group Modem took 350 out of the French National Assembly's 577 seats-lower than the 400 some analysts had predicted but still a remarkable showing given Macron's movement was founded just a year ago.

Le Pen, 48, who lost her presidential bid to centrist Emmanuel Macron, triumphed in her northern fiefdom of Henin-Beaumont, a depressed former mining town, the town's FN mayor Steeve Briois said.

The Republicans and their conservative allies will form the largest opposition bloc in parliament with 131 seats, while the far-right National Front won eight.

A whopping 91 percent of the MPs from Macron's party are newcomers to parliament, reflecting the president's priority for candidates from outside the political world.

But he may be getting more than he bargained for with the entry into parliament of loud voices from the ultra-left and far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen, both promising to fight his plans to overhaul French labor laws, one of the touchiest subjects in France. Then again, it's the biggest majority in the Assembly since the 1968 elections and the result also confirms the destruction of the Socialist party and the disarray of the Republicians.

The turnout hit a new record low of just 43%, offering Le Pen the opportunity to question the legitimacy of the new parliament and the strength of the support Macron has received. Collomb said the government wants to reduce the number of lawmakers in the future and change the voting system to introduce a partial proportional representation, which would give smaller parties better representation.

Government spokesman Christophe Castaner said the high abstention rate was a failure for the governing class and highlighted the need for a new politics.

But the abstention rate shows he must go carefully in a country with strong trade unions and a history of street protests that made past governments dilute new legislation.

"The rout of the Socialist Party is undeniable", said PS leader Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, who lost his seat in the first round and resigned his position on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, after being in power for the last five years, the Socialist party looks set to win fewer than 50 seats in total, its worst performance ever.

A minor reshuffle of the Cabinet, an obligatory move after parliamentary elections, is expected this week, perhaps as soon as Monday.

Macron won the final round of the presidential vote on May 7 with 66 percent of the vote. After the first round of elections a week ago, some anticipated that more than 400 seats would be won by the two parties.

Poirson chose to become a candidate in January when Macron sent a video to party members urging more women to put themselves forward.

Former Socialist prime minister Manuel Valls narrowly retained his seat in the Paris suburbs, but former education minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem - a one-time Socialist star - was beaten by an REM candidate in the central city of Lyon.
