Only Shkodran Mustafi, Matthias Ginter and risky PSG winger Julian Draxler from the World Cup winning squad have been selected for the Confederations Cup campaign, as Joachim Low looks to experiment in readiness for the defence of their world crown next year.

"We don't all know how fit we are after a long and hard season", said the 21-year-old.

"First half they were too good for us, and we struggled to get control of the game, " said Australia coach Ange Postecoglou.

Julian Draxler is one of the three players to have featured for Germany in the last World Cup. "We need to get a quick goal and then exert some dominance".

Germany is one of the strongest teams in world football, and are also looked upon as favourites to win the ongoing Confederations Cup in Russian Federation.

"The key for us is to believe in the way we play", said Australia's veteran midfielder Tim Cahill, 37, in Sunday's press conference.

"They're the kind of things we're going to have to measure as we go along, because we do have seven or eight that are at their first major tournament, that are going to have to play, there's no doubt about it".

The 2014 World Cup winners are now ranked third in the world but have thankfully left the majority of their big names behind as they look to blood younger players in the tournament. "They're also moving in their forward positions", he said. The 23-year-old winger, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in January, says he is "honoured" to do so, and for Draxler these weeks are an opportunity to cement for himself a berth in the most competitive area, attacking midfield, in the German jigsaw. Low surprisingly chose Bernd Leno over the likes of Kevin Trapp and Marc-Andre ter Stegen and that bold decision backfired spectacularly as the Bayer Leverkusen keeper made two howlers which made the match seem much closer than it really was.

Facts: Germany beat Australia 4-3 when the two sides met at the 2005 tournament. In 2011, they celebrated a shock 2-1 victory over an under-strength German side in Mönchengladbach before drawing 2-2 with the World Championsin Kaiserslautern in 2015.

The result left European champion Portugal and Gold Cup victor Mexico trailing host Russian Federation in Group A. Russian Federation opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday.

Germany have never actually won the Confederations Cup before.

"While others may think there's some sort of weakened aspect to it, that's not how we're approaching it".

Australia will face Germany in a Confederations Cup, Group B soccer.

Germany' will wear black-arm bands in Sochi to pay their respects to former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who died on Friday.
