In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

Trump advisers describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.

The denial Sunday by Jay Sekulow, one of several personal lawyers Trump has hired to represent him in the Russian Federation case, is the latest of many examples in which the president's aides and lawyers have scrambled to avert a public-relations mess created by Trump's tweets, off-script remarks or leaked private conversations.

President Trump recently sent a tweet seemingly aimed at the Deputy AG, saying he is being investigated by the man who told him to fire the FBI Director.

Despite the reported discussions, his current legal team has not been changed, and Ms Gorelick has been preparing Kushner for a meeting with investigators from the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

America is edging ever closer to a new long, national nightmare, given President Donald Trump's explosive response to signs that special counsel Robert Mueller is approaching the epicenter of White House power.

The Post reported last week that Robert Mueller - the special counsel appointed to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election - was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice. "The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction".

Sekulow told "Fox News Sunday" and three other shows that Trump's tweet was based exclusively on a Washington Post report, and he insisted Trump wasn't under investigation. But Sen. Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them.

The Post article debates Trump's motives and Rubio's as far as their relationship goes, but concluded that the senator seems "in awe" of the president.

"He, from every pronouncement we have seen, feels very strongly that he did nothing wrong, and he wants people to say that, because he feels very strongly about it", Rubio said.

"One way or the other, we need an answer", Schiff said on ABC's "This Week" yesterday. "And he's expressing himself in that way".

"Not only do I believe it, I know it". "The best thing that could happen for the president, and the country, is a full and credible investigation".

Sekulow says that Trump hasn't been notified of any investigation. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time. But legal analysts say few criminal investigations begin with an identified target. This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses.

He also explained that "the tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking info to The Washington Post".

"So his legal team and the president responds", Sekulow said on NBC. He said the tweet last Friday from Trump was specifically directed at a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

On Sunday, Trump again called the investigation a "witch hunt".
