London Police Plead For Calm After Attack At Mosque

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident a "horrific terror attack".

Helicopters buzzed overhead, and ambulances and police cars raced to the scene.

"And like all acts of terrorism it seeks to drive us apart", she said.

-The Finsbury Park Mosque "condemns in the strongest terms" a "heinous terrorist attack" early Monday, according to a statement released by the mosque. Police shot and killed the three Islamic extremists who carried out the attack.

There has been a spate of terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom in recent weeks.

"People now have a big question about safety in London after all these terrorist attacks, and we want to assure them that they are safe, and that's why we want to work with the police", Kozbar said.

The attack occurred outside the Muslim Welfare House, a small mosque with about 200 congregants.

"And if we can not prevent an attack then we will seek obviously to bring people to justice".

Kacimi says the attacker shouted at the crowd, but that the local imam intervened to save his life.

"And then the imam of the mosque actually came out and said: "Don't hit him, hand him over to the police, pin him down".

"If you read the holy book it says never to kill for nothing - you will go to hell fire... He saved his life basically".

Abdulrahman Aidroos and his friends were attending to an elderly man who had collapsed on the ground when suddenly he saw a man in a van driving "straight into us". He complained that the "mainstream media" was unwilling to call the attack a terrorist incident for many hours. Eight have been hospitalized. "An attack on one community is an attack on all of us", said Police Commissioner Cressida Dick. He has since been arrested and police have said he will have a mental health assessment in "due course". Two people were treated at the scene.

- The Islington borough of north London, of which Finsbury Park is a part, is home to a large Muslim community.

One man was trapped under the van and people tried to lift up the vehicle to free him. A forensic tent, center, stands next to a van, in white, at Finsbury Park in north London after the vehicle struck pedestrians Monday, June 19, 2017.

Athmane, a resident in the area, told Al Jazeera the suspect "was waving for victory, and was smiling" after he was taken into custody.

As reported by the Financial Times, worshipers were leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque shortly after midnight.

The Daily Mail piece has now been updated to describe the situation as a "terror attack".

Local youths spoken to by Middle East Eye said they were forced to restrain the alleged attacker themselves for between 10 and 20 minutes.

Police said they had deployed extra officers "to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan".

Monday's incident followed a series of attacks in Britain.

The Met Police said no other suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.

The man was being held down, beaten and kicked when Muslim cleric Mohammed Mahmoud stepped in to plead with people just to restrain him until police arrived.

May said she would chair an emergency security Cabinet session Monday.

A second clip shows the man, who is white with black hair and wearing a blue top, being bundled towards a police van. These people are not lovable rogues, they're exactly the same kind of divisive terrorist-inspiring hatemongers as the Islamist hate preachers.

Someone in the crowd is heard shouting, "No one touch him!"
