Megyn Kelly makes the case for Alex Jones interview

After a week's worth of controversy and second-guessing, NBC News anchor Megyn Kelly aired her sit-down interview with internet provocateur Alex Jones on Sunday evening, finally answering the question: if a news show gives a conspiracy theorist a platform, but nobody's there to watch it, does it make a sound? AFHV boasted an audience of 3.7 million viewers to Ms. Kelly's 3.5 million. Meanwhile, Jones demanded the segment be killed, insisting NBC News' promo for the interview had been edited to distort his views and threatening to release his secret recording of the full interview - which has yet to surface.

While Mr. Jones apologized in May for peddling two other baseless conspiracy theories - one involving a D.C. pizza parlor, the other an Idaho-based yogurt factory - he has not apologized for calling the Sandy Hook shooting a hoax and claims that his views on the tragedy have been misconstrued.

NBC noted Kelly's radioactive interview, which had been a top media story for days, outdelivered CBS's 60 Minutes rerun in the demo.

It probably doesn't come as a great surprise that Fox News commentator Sean Hannity is defending conspiracy theorist Alex Jones over his former colleague Megyn Kelly, whose interview of the Infowars creator has caused a furor of debate over the past few weeks.

Those numbers were practically even with last week's episode, in which Kelly interviewed Fox sideline reporter Erin Andrews, and down sharply from her June 4 debut episode, which featured an interview with Russian president Vladimir Puttin and drew 6.1 million viewers. That episode drew an average of 6.2 million viewers. In the conversation, Kelly was heard promising she would not portray him as "some kind of boogeyman". There were still many on both sides of the aisle who refused to watch the interview or saw the interview itself as reckless, but others praised Kelly for exposing Jones to the world. Relatives of some of the victims also spoke in the Sunday segment on NBC.

Jones' comments about the Sandy Hook shooting-he continues to argue the murderous rampage was a government-sanctioned hoax-were the main flashpoint for many advertisers and viewers.

"What will show her success long term is if she gets the ratings she needs or not", he explained.
