Most Israeli air strikes in Syrian territory in the last few years have aimed to prevent weapons smuggling to Iranian-allied Hezbollah, which fights alongside the Assad government.

Israel has been secretly providing aid to Syrian rebels groups in the Golan Heights for years, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday night.

The report's finding are based on information provided by "half a dozen rebels and three people familiar with Israel's thinking", who said that Israel's secret dealings with the rebels began as early as 2013 under former Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya'alon and that they continue to this day, with the goal of keeping pro-Iranian groups, like Hezbollah, away from the border.

According to the Journal, Israel has offered rebel groups medical supplies, food, funding and even hard cash in order to safeguard the country's border from the ever-deepening crisis taking place in Israel's northern neighbor Syria, which is suffering from the consequences of the bloody and grueling civil war raging in the country since 2011.

Is is well known that Israel has provided medical help for Syrian civilians and fighters inside its own borders in the past.

Fursan al-Joulan is not connected to the Free Syrian Army and its Western-supplies of money and arms.

Israel may be funding up to four other rebel groups which have Western backing. The aid, said the Journal, helps the groups pay salaries and buy weapons and ammunition.

These sources told the Wall Street Journal that a special unit was carved out of the Israeli army to oversee to the aid operation and that Israel considers the situation far enough in advance that it sets out a specific budget to invest in the effort.

"Israel stood by our side in a heroic way", Moatasem al-Golani, spokesman for Fursan al-Joulan (Knights of the Golan) told WSJ.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits an IDF field hospital treating wounded Syrians, on the Golan Heights on February 18, 2014.

Both the Prime Minister's office and the IDF would not comment on the story, other than to say that the IDF is "committed to securing the borders of Israel and preventing the establishment of terror cells and hostile forces ... in addition to providing humanitarian aid to the Syrians living in the area". "We wouldn't have survived without Israel's assistance".

Israel and Syria have technically been in a state of warfare for decades.

The group's commander said they receive around $5,000 per month in Israeli financial assistance. Syria controls around one third of the Golan Heights border, and Israel occupies the rest.
