Tropical Storm off South America becomes a named storm

Daily Rain and Storms

A tropical system trying to form near the Yucatan Peninsula. The area is forecast to organize and move near the Yucatan Peninsula this weekend.

The next two names for hurricanes are Bret and Cindy. For the uninitiated, the wet side of storms is east of the storm's center while the west side tends to remain on the drier side. This storm is forecast to stay a tropical storm before fizzling out.

With this storm, a broad trough of low pressure is creating a large stretch of cloudiness and showers over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and adjacent land areas.

Most of the forecast models are in agreement that the storm will likely strengthen once it reaches the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, though none of them predict it will reach hurricane strength. Hurricane hunter aircraft were expected to investigate the system Monday afternoon.

Where will it eventually go? Computer models tasked to tropical systems vary widely until an actual area of low pressure has formed.

It is still too early to predict a potential track for where the disturbance could form. But that may not matter all that much. Once it makes landfall, we'll start to get increasing moisture toward the rest of the southeast and Carolinas. Several models take the system towards Texas and Mexico, while others deviate more towards the Alabama coast, or heading into Florida.

Check the Palm Beach Post storm tracking map.

That's not all that's going on in the tropics on Monday.

One of those two systems, the one farther out in the Atlantic, triggered the first-ever "Potential Tropical Cyclone" alert from the hurricane center on Sunday. The NHC is keeping a close eye on this system and has given the low an 90% chance of development into a tropical cyclone over the next five days and a 70% chance of development within 48 hours.

This could mean tide levels above normal that would create a flood threat for areas outside the levee system.

"We're calling it potential tropical cyclone No. 2", Bridges said.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect across Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and the east coast of Venezuela.

Will this storm also eventually threaten the U.S.?
