Trump confirms he is being investigated over Comey firing

The requests from Mueller also pointed towards a new scrutiny on whether the President tried to influence the Russian Federation investigation through conversations he had with Comey, whom he ultimately fired, or with other officials. The Fix is here to help.

I've broken down each of the three prongs below.

Feinstein has said the Judiciary Committee should investigate, but had asked Grassley to keep the investigations separate. To better understand the others, check out Amber Phillips's guide.

"The CIA does not, has not, and will never hide intelligence from the president, period". Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the USA democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. "We are not in a position to comment further".

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe.

In his tweet, Trump says he was "told" to fire Comey, but the commander in chief normally doesn't take orders from members of his administration.

"I was anxious by a number of the contacts that the Russians had with US persons", Brennan said. Reports have alleged that Trump asked both men to publicly quash the credibility of the Russian Federation investigation.

Mueller and Comey are former associates, having worked closely together while Comey was deputy attorney general and Mueller was FBI Director under former President George W. Bush. The Post said both men refused the president's request.

Trump's decision to go after Rosenstein sparked widespread speculation in Washington that he may dismiss the deputy attorney general in yet another attempt to get past the Russian Federation investigation, although the likely effect of such a step would be to ignite a new political firestorm and claims that the President is abusing his power and mounting a coverup.

Mueller's office has also asked the National Security Agency for any documents or notes related to the agency's interactions with the White House as part of the Russian investigation. "I can go around them", the tweet read.

Mr Comey gave evidence last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

The Post quoted five people briefed on the requests, saying those who agreed to be interviewed include national intelligence director Daniel Coats, Admiral Mike Rogers who heads the NSA, and his recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett.

We know less about this prong than the other two.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Trump was under investigation for obstruction of justice, citing unnamed officials.

A person familiar with Trump's tweet said the President was referencing news reports that he is under investigation and was not indicating that he's been personally informed by the special counsel that he is a target of the probe. A company owned by a Turkish American businessman who is close to top Turkish officials paid the Flynn Intel Group more than $500,000 for research on Fethullah Gulen, the cleric that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims was responsible for a coup attempt last summer.
