As Mueller begins to build his team to investigate allegations of collusion between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's political team to undermine the 2016 election, the president's conservative allies are digging in to discredit Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel by Trump's own Justice Department.

On the last hour of Morning Joe, Tuesday, co-host Joe Scarborough threw cold water on Ruddy's claims saying that three high level sources all told him that Mueller was safe and that the president never suggested dumping the special counsel.

The appearances, however, are likely to be overshadowed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions' public appearance at a Senate intelligence committee hearing.

Mueller was appointed to the position by Deputy Attorney General Ron Rosenstein on May 17, less than one week after Trump abruptly and without warning fired FBI Director James Comey - and subsequently admitted in a televised interview that he had "this Russian Federation thing" in mind when he made a decision to fire the widely respected FBI head. Though Ruddy was at the White House earlier in the day, those aides said he did not meet with Trump, but White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, a former conservative media leader himself.

The Washington Post originally reported that the probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller had been expanded to include Trump, who is suspected of having attempted to obstruct the investigation. "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

"The attorney general is the one who has to fire him", said CNN's senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on "Anderson Cooper 360".

Former CIA agent and frequent CNN guest Phil Mudd thinks that President Trump should admit he was bluffing about the existence of possible tapes of his conversations with fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. He is nearly certain to be asked about the possibility of the president firing Mueller.

A source close to the President told CNN's Jim Acosta that Trump is being counseled to steer clear of such a dramatic move like firing the special counsel. "He comes from a law firm that represents members of the Trump family", Ruddy said. ADVERTISEMENT "I think it's pretty straightforward", Mudd said Friday on CNN.

And deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said simply: "Chris speaks for himself".

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, scoffed at the idea that the president might fire Mueller.

"There are some real conflicts".

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY Is Robert Mueller the next to go?

He added that he believes it would be a mistake to fire Mueller, but said the "the basis of his investigation is flim-flam". "Don't waste our time".
