Trump tweets of witch hunt amid Russian Federation probe, bashes Hillary Clinton

Comey, who was sacked on May 9, told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump dismissed him to undermine the FBI's Russian Federation probe. "Nice", the President tweeted.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

A spokesman for the office of the special counsel declined to comment, and so did a representative for the director of National Intelligence.

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded. A day later, Rosenstein appointed Mueller, who was at the helm of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the September 11 attacks, as special counsel.

Trump, however, referred to the Post's reporting as a "phony" story in a tweet Thursday. Mueller is now leading the investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point.

The transition order came the same day that Vice President Mike Pence's confirmed that he had hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

Richard Cullen is a former Virginia attorney general and a former United States attorney for the eastern district of Virginia.

Mueller's investigation appeared to be reaching a broadening circle of current and former officials.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, carried the report on Wednesday.

It also asks former transition officials to retain records related to five former Trump campaign associates: former campaign chairman Paul Manafort; his deputy Rick Gates; former foreign policy adviser Carter Page; retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn; and Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser.

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe. Trump said on Twitter, calling the probe into him a "Witch Hunt".

On Thursday afternoon, Trump sent two tweets attacking his former opponent. Grassley said Comey's dismissal and Comey's testimony on Lynch should be looked at together, noting that Comey "took the opportunity in his testimony to clear his own name by denouncing as false the administration's claims that the FBI rank-and-file had lost confidence in Mr. Comey's leadership in the wake of the Clinton email investigation".

Trump was set to escape the Washington pressure cooker on Saturday.
