Brooks Koepka Wins the US Open

Brooks Koepka has won the U.S. Open title for his first major championship.

Third round leader Brian Harman, who had led by one-shot at the start of the round, finished second on 12 under after an even-par 72.

Koepka's 16 under total tied Rory McIlroy's record (2011, Congressional) for lowest score in relation to par at a U.S. Open. "Good ball-striker, good putter", Koepka said. "You never know how you're going to react being up there in the final round, you've got to deal with that and it's all new for me". "It was probably one of the best shots I hit all week". The victory moved Koepka from 19th to fifth in the FedExCup standings. 12 and 13. A hole ahead, and fresh off his par save, Koepka began his birdie binge.

He followed with birdies at 15 and 16 to suddenly widen his gap to four shots and close in on the Open championship.

It was just the third time a victor at the U.S. Open has been double-digits under par, and this week was the first time anyone other than the victor achieved the feat.

Koepka made three birdies on the back nine, including a lovely putt on 16.

Koepka was tied with Harman on the back nine when he faced a tricky 9-foot putt to save par at No. 13.

Harman finished with a bogey on 18.

Thomas, looking for more from where his record-setting 63 came from the day before, was out of the hunt by the middle of the front nine. "If you look at the negatives too much, I mean, you're going to be stuck doing that the whole time". A chip on the fourth nearly went in, but then trickled back to 4 feet and he blocked the par putt to the right. Everyone giving me a piece of advice, stick to what I've done, that's what I did today.

"What I've done this week is unbelievable", Koepka said. At the same time, I don't feel as if I lost the golf tournament.

"Dustin actually called me last night and told me the same thing, just stay patient".

"The par save on 13. So I think that was kind of the changing point of the round for me". Knowing for sure he would walk away the champion.

"He birdied 14, 15, 16, and that was kind of lights out", Harman said.

Like Harman, Thomas couldn't match Koepka's final-round mastery, which came on Father's Day.

Brooks Koepka becomes the first ever U.S. Open victor on Wisconsin soil after a final round of five-under.

"Obviously the wind picked up, and I felt like that played right in my hand", said Koepka. Without a card on any tour when he got out of FSU, Koepka filled his passport on the Challenge Tour with stamps from Kazakhstan and Kenya, Scotland and Spain, India and Madeira Island.

NOTES: Scottie Scheffler, who plays collegiately for the University of Texas, was the top amateur finisher at 287 for the tournament with a Sunday round of 73. Rickie Fowler started the day two shots off the lead and looking to win his first major title, but he couldn't catch Koepka.

Another major, another maiden champion. That posture went all the way to the understated double-fist pump at No. 18, after his two-foot par closed it with Harman and Thomas still on the course.

Growing up in Florida and with a great-uncle who played in the major leagues, Koepka's first love was baseball, but somehow life led him onto the golf course.

"I think the Ryder Cup was kind of the first real taste of true pressure I think I've ever felt", Koepka said. It's one of those things, not a big fan of losing, I don't think anyone out here is.
