Van Strikes Pedestrians Outside Mosque in London

The driver of the van has reportedly been arrested

According to the Metropolitan Police Service, a vehicle collided with pedestrians in Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, north London.

(AP Photo/Tim Ireland). A van is seen near Finsbury Park station after the vehicle struck pedestrians in north London, Monday June 19, 2017.

The van driver in the mosque attack was arrested after being seized and prevented from fleeing by bystanders; a Muslim imam reportedly stopped the crowd from injuring the attacker.

- Two eyewitnesses tell CNN they saw three men in the van. "People bleeding. I've seen the guy being held on the floor", Ibn Oman told Reuters at the scene.

South Wales Police are working with officers from London on the investigation.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, national counter-terrorism coordinator, said the victims were all from the Muslim community.

Witnesses described hearing the man, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, shout: "I'm going to kill Muslims".

The man who died was already receiving first aid at the time of the attack, the latest in a spate of terrorist strikes in Britain. "Some of them were very bad".

Whether or not the incident was an intentional act of violence against the Muslim community has yet to be known. Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

Residents near Cardiff said they were "shocked" after seeing photographs of their neighbour arrested in London.

The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety more than a decade ago for sermons by radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who was sentenced to life in a US prison in January 2015 for his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs condemned the "horrible attack" on at a mosque in London last night in a statement on Twitter. Which is why it's confusing that for a while after the attack happened, some news headlines neglected to use the word "terrorism;" a messed-up thing that did not go unnoticed by the Harry Potter author.

Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely.

Police said eight people had been taken to three separate hospitals and two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. "It is home to a multitude of communities that together make London one of the greatest cities on Earth".

Khan said there would be extra police to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan.

The attack laid bare the frustrations of Muslims who feel they've been unfairly equated with the extremists who carry out atrocities in the name of Islam. "Our prayers are with the victims".

- The head of Tell MAMA, an anti-Islamophobia group, says anti-Muslim hate crime in the United Kingdom has increased noticeably after the recent terror attacks in Manchester and London.

Imam Mohammed Mahmoud was hailed for his efforts to calm the chaotic situation in the aftermath of the attack and was said to have used his body to shield the suspected terrorist from the fury of onlookers.

Finsbury Park Mosque has been home in the past to several Islamist terrorists, including imam Mostafa Kamel Mostafa who is now serving a life sentence for killing four people, and shoe bomber Richard Reid who attempted to detonate explosives packed in his shoe on an American Airlines flight in December 2001.
