Hamilton secures pole in Canada

Vettel and teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished one-two at Monaco two weeks ago while Hamilton struggled.

Lewis Hamilton is still finding novel ways to win the Canadian Grand Prix.

Hamilton on Sunday took full advantage of his 65th pole position and led from lights to flag to finish 15 seconds clear of Finn Bottas who, in turn, was 15 seconds ahead of third-placed Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull.

There was some discussion between Perez and Force India, telling him to let Ocon past - Perez didn't want to and Force India agreed to give him three laps to overtake Ricciardo before Ocon would try to overtake.

"It's been an awesome weekend, very grateful, probably going to jump in the lake later".

However it was a tougher day at the office for Sebastian Vettel, who suffered front wing damage at the start. He was in a class of his own in qualifying and a race of his own on Sunday. One of the problems was the wind tunnel gave them one reading and the simulator gave them a different and along with that a mistake in setting up their auto which prevented them getting Pirelli's supersoft and ultrasoft tires working in their limited temperature windows.

"Wow, I am shaking.I am speechless", an emotional Hamilton said after being presented with Senna's helmet. "You are hoping the vehicle held together, and it did".

After the past three years had seen the German marque dominate, notching up 51 wins out of 59, having Ferrari not only step up to compete with them, but actually beat them in a straight fight, has proven to be a breath of fresh air.

Max Verstappen surged from fifth to second, clipping Vettel's front wing on his way past before Felipe Massa was taken out by a spinning Carlos Sainz after the Toro Rosso driver had lost control following contact with Romain Grosjean's Haas auto in the approach to Turn 3.

Lance Stroll, the Canadian rookie, scored his first points in Formula One at his home grand prix, with what was by far his best drive of the season, finishing in ninth for Williams.

Sainz and Massa didn't make it out of the start, with Sainz getting clipped and then sliding into the Toro Rosso.

"I'm expecting it to be very close in the race with Ferrari", Bottas said.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton (44) leads at the start of the race.

A five-time victor at the Canadian GP, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, Hamilton already led qualifying — but by just four one-thousandths of a second over Sebastien Vettel — when he made his final trip around the circuit.

A technical glitch for Raikkonen promoted Vettel to sixth before he took fifth position after Ocon ran off the road at Turn One with four laps remaining.

Still no points for McLaren, despite Alonso being in 10th place until the penultimate lap when his car's Honda engine expired.

Mishaps at the start put Hamilton and Bottas home free. He will head to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a fortnight's time with his championship charge now firmly back on track.
