No sense of smell can lead to weight loss

The mouse on the top grew plump but the mouse on the bottom, whose sense of smell was blocked by UC Berkeley researchers, stayed a normal weight.

"This is a very exciting study, and the outcome is quite compelling", says neuroendocrinologist Tamas Horvath of Yale School of Medicine, who wasn't connected to the research.

Mice with an enhanced sense of smell gain more weight than mice with typical olfactory abilities despite similar diets.

" This paper is cosnidered among the first studies which really presents the way to alter the manner in which our brain percieves balanmce of energy along with the regulation of the balance of the energy if the olfactory inputrs are manipulated", a fellow at Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre in Los angeles In the United States, Celina Riera stated.

She also points out that sensitivity to smell is more when hungry than after consumption of food in both mice and human; possibly, the lack of smell tricks the body into thinking that it has already eaten. Findings show that if individuals won't be able to smell their food, it is likely that their bodies would burn it instead of storing it.

They are suggesting that the mice with smell that gained weight through the way the calories were perceived. "If we can validate this in humans, perhaps we can actually make a drug that doesn't interfere with smell but still blocks that metabolic circuitry".

The researchers say that eliminating the animals' olfactory sense somehow prompted them to burn fat.

The researchers noted the rodents sympathetic nervous system, which is known to increase fat burning, sped up. The mice turned their beige fat cells - the subcutaneous fat storage cells that accumulate around our thighs and midriffs - into brown fat cells, which burn fatty acids to produce heat. A few mice became lean, mean, burning machines after they turned all their beige cells into brown cells.

In these mice, white fat cells - the storage cells that cluster around our internal organs and are associated with many health problems - also shrank in size. Brown adipose tissue or hibernating gland with small fat vacuoles.

The test mice were split into two categories, one of them being used as a control group.

But the change in weight after the loss of smell was visibly noticeable.

It could prove a viable alternative to stomach stapling ops or gastric band surgery. Their development was then compared to those of mice with a regular sense of smell.

In the second technique, a benign virus was engineered to carry the receptor into olfactory cells only via inhalation.

There was a time when we satisfied ourselves by just the smell of a food we were not allowed to eat because of the unhealthy amount of fat it contained.

When mice can't smell, they remain thin like the rodent on the left, even if they eat a fatty diet. For the former, insulin sensitivity and response to glucose - both of which are disrupted in metabolic disorders like obesity - remained normal.

The team also found that these obese mice, which had developed glucose intolerance, managed to bring their tolerance levels to normal even though they consumed a high-fat diet.
