The officials further added that clearance operations are still underway by the joint forces, mainly focusing on clearing the mines planted by the Taliban insurgents.

About 13,000 USA and allied troops in a NATO-led force are deployed in Afghanistan.

The report commended Afghanistan's security forces, saying fewer civilians were caught in the crossfire compared to previous year.

Afghan forces recaptured Nawa district in the southern Helmand province from Taliban militants after three days of military operations, a defense ministry statement said Monday.

A two-day offensive launched on Saturday saw security forces take the district centre of Nawa, to the south of Lashkar Gah, killing more than 50 fighters and destroying vehicles and equipment, said defence ministry spokesman, General Dawlat Waziri.

Naway is located just 16 kilometres (10 miles) from Lashkar Gah, and had been a staging area for militant attacks on the provincial capital.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, the Taliban snatched three border police officers from their vehicle in the western Herat province, including a woman, and killed them, said Jelani Farhad, the provincial governor's spokesman.
