MIM may abstain from Prez poll

MIM has chose to support Meira Kumar, the Presidential Candidate of the Opposition in the elections tomorrow.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Congress today held a meeting at the official residence of Leader of Opposition Narsingha Mishra here in connection with the upcoming presidential election.

In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP has 122 members, Sena-63, Congress-42, NCP-41, Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP-I)- three, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA)- three, MIM - two, MNS, Samajwadi Party, BBM, CPI-M and RSP - one each and Independents - seven. MIM has 10 votes. This includes that of Hyderabad parliamentarian and party president, Asaduddin Owaisi.

Voting for the presidential poll began at 10am on Monday and will continue till 5pm. It, however, did no cast its vote in 2007 as Ms. Pratibha Patil, UPA's Presidential candidate was mired in controversy over her comments on Abaya or traditional wear of Muslim women.

Sources in the political corridors said that MLAs close to Phoolka may follow suit and vote against Meira Kumar and in favour of Ram Nath Kovind. "All will vote for Meira Kumar", said a senior MIM leader speaking to Express here on Saturday evening.

If MIM abstains from the Presidential poll, it may not cause any major damage to Meira Kumar, but it could be a setback to the Congress which is trying to sew up a grand "secular" alliance against the ruling BJP-led NDA coalition.
