At least nine people, including five children, have been killed by a flash flood at a national forest in the U.S. state of Arizona.

The flooding was the result of a thunderstorm that pounded central Arizona Saturday while more than a hundred people were gathered at the Cold Springs Swimming Hole, Water Wheel Fire and Medical District Fire Chief Ron Sattelmaier told the Associated Press.

Los Angeles Times reports that it was a warm summer day in Arizona and the group had made preparations to enjoy the cool surroundings when a severe thunderstorm happened in a nearby area and it dumped heavy rainfall on the mountain.

Four others were found on Saturday and two people remain missing.

A 13-year-old boy from the same group was still missing Sunday.

Police have confirmed the deceased as 60-year-old Celia Garcia and her children Maria Raya, Maribel Raya, 24, and Javier Raya, 14.

They have not been named by authorities.

Four family members were rescued Saturday afternoon, said Hornung.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix says that most of Arizona is under flash flood watch until Monday evening. It is about 20 feet wide and 20 feet long with a waterfall above it. There were no notices or warnings at the trailhead, Alexander said. Arizona is in its monsoon season.

However, it had not been raining in the area where people were swimming.

"I wish there was a way from keeping people from getting in there during monsoon season", Sattelmaier said.

"We were on this trail, and 10 minutes into the trail, we started seeing water flooding down, just a lot of water coming down", said Mandisa Alexander.

A flash flood warning was issued for the Phoenix area until 1:30 a.m.

"If it's an intense burn, it creates a glaze on the surface that just repels water", said Darren McCollum, a meteorologist. Visitors are reminded to be vigilant about the weather, he said.

Elsewhere in the USA, officials are concerned flooding could impact the start of classes next month.

They didn't hear the tragic news of the fatalities, until they got back to safety. Nine of her family members were killed in the flood.
