Bottas perfects strategy, gets lucky in charge to P2 at Silverstone

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel was followed by Esteban Ocon and his Force India teammate Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa for Williams.

He said: "There's a feeling I can't really feels unbelievable to be up here".

Hamilton, despite having outperformed his rivals on Saturday, is not willing to take things lightly and said he was excited about being in a tough battle with rival Ferrari drivers Vettel and Raikkonen.

"I think we had a good auto, especially in the corners". After some expletives being shouted at in the Ferrari team radio, Raikkonen can swap his tires and rejoin in fourth place behind teammate Vettel.

The first lap drama was between the two Toro Rosso's of Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kyvat which we have seen a several times this season.

Vettel was able to crawl into the pits for repairs in time to ensure he still finished seventh to collect the points that kept him top heading into the next race in Hungary.

Ricciardo went into the race with a five-place grid penalty because he changed the gearbox on his Red Bull.

Kvyat was hit with a drive-through penalty for yet another opening lap incident and now has 9 points on his license - with another three forcing a race ban.

Vettel and Verstappen were scrapping on and off the track in a fight for third, giving the packed crowd several thrilling moments. His Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, who spun off the circuit during the second session, ended the day third in the order.

Raikkonen needed a late tyre change which appeared to promote Vettel to the podium but disaster struck for the four-time champion on the last of 51 laps. Two laps from the end, I don't know what happened - before Turn Six under the tunnel, the tyre didn't explode, but the rubber part came off suddenly.

Alonso later retired from the race with a loss of fuel pressure and then a loss of power as a result. A blisteringly quick out lap by Vettel ensured the undercut worked.

With 10 laps remaining, Hamilton was clear by 12 seconds and Bottas, fourth, was closing on Vettel, intent on fighting for a podium finish. Vettel, already enduring a hard afternoon, had been due to cross the line fourth until a punctured front left tyre two laps from the end forced the German to pit, dropping him down to seventh at the flag.
