British royals awaited in Poland at start of a European Union visit

The Warsaw visit is part of a five-day tour of Poland and Germany, and is part of a campaign by the British government to include members of the royal family as unofficial ambassadors during recently launched negotiations on Britain's exit from the EU.

But all eyes will be on the couple's children, George aged three and two-year-old Charlotte, who are getting used to travelling overseas having joined their parents in Canada a year ago for an official trip.

The Duchess and Duke and Cambridge, Polish President Andrzej Duda and his wife at the presidential palace in Warsaw. It is the third tour for Prince George, who turns 4 this month, who accompanied his parents to Australia and New Zealand in 2014 as a toddler.

There will be a competitive element to the European royal visit by Prince William and Kate Middleton who will join forces with a team from Cambridge to take on a team of German rowers.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold a private meeting with the royal couple in Berlin at the start of the German leg of their tour on Wednesday.

The couple previously faced off in dragon boats in Canada - a race won by William - in America's Cup yachts in Auckland Harbour - where Kate won - and in a sprinting race at Queen Elizabeth Park earlier this year, which they both lost to Prince Harry.

The pre-Brexit trip, taken at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has been seen as a chance to improve relations with European Union nations as negotiations get underway.

During their five-day tour William and Kate will also meet survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi oppression as well as visiting the former Stutthof concentration camp and Berlin's Holocaust museum and memorial.

Prior to departing London for Poland, William and Kate on Sunday watched Roger Federer win his record-setting eighth Wimbledon title.

William and Kate also celebrated the 70th birthday of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, over the weekend.
