The Duchess of Cornwall glowed in a navy blue dress coat by Fiona Clare as she posed with the Prince of Wales by her side for photographer Mario Testino. Charles went on to marry Diana Spencer in 1981 but within a few years he had returned to Camilla, conducting an extra-marital affair, as Princess Diana also sought comfort from officer James Hewitt.

The photograph, which was taken in May by famed photographer Mario Testino, shows Charles and Camilla in the morning room of their London home, Clarence House.

The Peruvian photographer said that when he first met Camilla, more than a decade ago, he "discovered a kind and attractive person with a wonderful sense of humour".

Her own image with the public has also improved from a low point after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. "Doing this latest assignment to celebrate Her Royal Highness's 70th birthday is a true honor".

It is thought family members - from her son Tom Parker Bowles and daughter Laura Lopes to the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, who are playing polo in Gloucestershire - are likely to be among the guests.

Ms Seward said: The whole Diana situation has always been very hard for Camilla.

Obviously there are people who will never like Camilla as they see her as the person who broke up the marriage.
