Grenfell Insulation Was Acceptable Only with Non-Combustible Cladding

A number of councils have been removing the zinc rainproof coated foam boards following the blaze at the West London housing estate in June which claimed at least 80 lives.

Landlords across Britain have been told that pulling off the panels is leaving less fire resistant materials underneath exposed to the elements.

The Guardian has reported viewing a formal certificate issued by building inspector organisation the Local Authority Building Control which it said stated that the synthetic insulation chosen for a £10m refurbishment of the tower was acceptable for use on tall buildings only if used with non-flammable fibre cement panels but were used in Grenfell's case with combustible polyethylene panels.

Since the fire, both the Celotex insulation and the Reynobond PE aluminium cladding have been withdrawn from sale - both of which were less expensive compared with non-combustible alternatives. But as one resident of the 22 story Thorne House put it, "now it is exposed, you only need some idiot after a night on the drink deciding to conduct their own fire test and the whole block goes up".

Arnold Tarling, a chartered surveyor at Hindwoods and a fire safety expert, said: "It is definitely a fire risk now when it might not have been in the past".

This month we reported on the chilling video taken from inside Grenfell Tower which showed the charred aftermath of the deadly blaze.

It was the only exit for those living inside the North Kensington building and many desperate people jumped from windows to avoid being burnt alive.

Footage shows hardworking emergency services officers going from floor-to-floor of the gutted 24-storey tower block.

The harrowing video has been released as cops reveal the painstaking work they are doing following the carnage to recover bodies.
