HTC grovels after serving up keyboard ads to some users

First reported by Android Police, some users started seeing local adverts in the default keyboard on the HTC 10, the company's previous generation flagship device.

HTC has been one of the biggest names when it comes to hardware design. Various OEMs for the Android ecosystem have been ensuring that the third party apps they utilise for their products remain as ad-free as possible. This is something that no one expected from a multinational giant which has such a reputation in the markets. Users have expressed their concern and anger on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and various other social media platforms.

Let's just be honest.

For what it's worth, it was never the OEM's intention to pester you with advertising while typing and drastically reducing your precious screen real estate. It added that the ads cropped up in the keyboard due to an error.

An updated TouchPal keyboard, which HTC had been using as a default on some devices, has started serving banner ads to unsuspecting users of phones like the HTC 10. To do that, go to Settings Apps All apps Look for the app (TouchPal) Uninstall updates. This is absolutely not the experience we intended, and we're working to immediately fix the error and remove the ads as quickly as possible."-Jeff Gordon, HTC Global PR".

There is no official explanation as to why this is happening but at least HTC 10 owners know they've been heard by the company and that the Taiwanese tech giant has already reached out to the public.

While Microsoft has always been criticised for advertising its own services, such as OneDrive, on Windows 10, HTC smartphone owners are complaining that they are seeing ads for third-party services (below), possibly pulled from Google's AdSense service, whenever they are typing something. They are probably present because they're controlled by TouchPal.
