Kvyat: Sainz should've seen collision coming

Asked if he feels the Stewards are singling him out, he said: "I believe so".

"The driver knows when he sees what happens to me, that he's never going to be on the flawless line", said Kvyat.

"I believe this is racing, not ballet dancing - exactly what I said on the radio". "So when you put yourself there, you know the collision is 90% unavoidable".

Sainz was unwilling to talk about the incident in public, saying he wanted it to be dealt with behind closed doors at Toro Rosso.

"If the other vehicle had been more anticipating of things, he would have tried to get me back on the next straight, but it didn't happen".

"He just put himself there and said to his team-mate "ok, you can crash into me".

"That's what I believe happened, I completely disagree with penalty; yes of course there's responsibility on me also, but I think we both should be feeling responsible for what happened".

"I was narrowly within track limits, we believe the penalty was too harsh for what really happened".

But that wasn't the end of it unfortunately for Kvyat who was also handed two penalty points on his superlicense, bringing his total to nine and three points short of a race ban.

"I didn't leave the track", he said.

"I'm not going to give any opinion about it because I think it's something that needs to be kept internally and to be analysed internally", he said. "Me and the team both agreed on that, because the punishment was for leaving the track and rejoining the circuit". It's extremely strong. I saw so many incidents and it's five or ten seconds with a pit stop possibility. It doesn't feel very nice.

"We were battling for sure, giving each other quite a lot of room, going into fast corners, until I think one vehicle lost control and hit the other one". It makes everything look worse than it really was.

Asked whether the accident would sow further tension at Toro Rosso, Sainz - whose future has been subject to widespread speculation - added: "When there are situations out of your control, it's not like I'm going to be tense about it".

"[It is] something that will be discussed inside the team and I don't want generate any polemic, because I think the team has enough with two cars crashing out in the first lap".

"When you give each other space and you leave two auto lengths, like I did, for him to rejoin, there's nothing really to comment".
