Security forces nab a Palestinian man attempting to smuggle rare 4th century coins from the Gaza Strip into Israel, a statement from the Defense Ministry says.

In a search of a Palestinian merchant who was attempting to enter Israel through the crossing, Israeli officials discovered four rare coins, likely from the era of Alexander the Great.

The suspect was detained for questioning and denied entrance into Israel.

The Defense Ministry said the coins were purportedly trafficked from Egypt into Gaza and were being smuggled into Israel to be sold.

Antiquities smuggling has long bedeviled law enforcement agencies in Israel, which along with neighboring countries is littered with archeological treasure troves.
