The Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur Flight MH17 was shot down on July 17, 2014, by a missile, killing all 298 people aboard.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will join government and worldwide officials at a solemn ceremony to dedicate the memorial in the park of Vijfhuizen, close to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport where the flight took off from on July 17, 2014.

"A tree symbolizes "hope" and "future" in many cultures", the association for the victim's families said in a statement.

About 100 people are wanted in connection with the disaster, after Dutch-led investigators concluded the plane was shot down by a Russian-made BUK missile transported from Russia into areas held by pro-Russian rebels.

"Today, lighting the candles in memory, we bow our heads before 298 innocent victims of MH17 flight crash".

The commemoration ceremony included the unveiling of a "living memorial" designed by artist Ronald A. Westerhuis and landscape architect Robbert de Koning.

Moscow, which denies any involvement in the fighting in eastern Ukraine, also denies one of its rockets could have been used against MH17.

According to him, this crime might not have happened if a Russian missile had not been delivered from the territory of Russia amid the Russian aggression.

Last month, the Netherlands said that suspects in the case would be tried in a Dutch court, and under Dutch law.

The trees in the memorial will be surrounded by sunflowers, which bloom in July, and will "radiate a golden glow" over the trees, the foundation said.

The European Union foreign affairs chief, Federica Mogherini, has called for global cooperation in the hunt for those responsible for shooting down a Malaysian airlines plane over eastern Ukraine three years ago.

The monument for the victims near Schiphol Airport will be a memorial forest featuring one tree for each of the victims.

One apple tree has been dedicated to 16-year-old Gary, from Rotterdam, whose body has still not yet been identified. We don't want Gary to be forgotten. It is created to rust over time to symbolize the creeping passage of pain. The victims' names are also engraved in the pupil of the eye.
