US Calls on Iran to Release Americans Held on National Security Charges

"Also other people have been investigated, some of whom are in jail", Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said in a televised press conference.

At least four Iranian-Americans are known to be detained or imprisoned in Iran: Baquer Namazi, 80, and his son Siamak are serving 10-year sentences in Tehran's notorious Evin prison and are believed to be in ill health.

Iran is believed to hold a number of foreign nationals, mostly dual citizens of the United States and European countries, but many of their identities have been kept secret.

"It was verified and determined that he was gathering (information) and was involved in infiltration", said Mr Ejehi although he did not elaborate on what specific charges led to the conviction, which he said could be appealed against, or say when the verdict was handed down.

Iran sent a Chinese-American history researcher to prison for alleged espionage.

"He entered the country under the cover of a master's student", the report said, "but has been gathering secret and top secret [information]" for organizations such as "the U.S. state department ... the Harvard Kennedy School" and the British Institute of Persian Studies.

He said the person was a citizen of the United States and an unnamed country other than Iran.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the university said Wang was arrested while carrying out research linked to his doctorate dissertation on the Qajar dynasty.

It added: "We continue to use all the means at our disposal to advocate for U.S. citizens who need our assistance overseas especially for the release of any unjustly detained USA citizens held overseas". His field is late 19th- and early 20th-century Eurasian history.

During his time in Iran and before he was arrested, Wang had digitally archived 4,500 pages of documents but he had been under close covert surveillance the whole time.

The news services, citing judiciary authorities, also said the brother of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had been detained amid allegations of financial improprieties.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department called for all U.S. citizens jailed in Iran to be immediately released.

"The Iranian regime continues to detain United States citizens and other foreigners on fabricated national security-related charges", an official said. It is said that most of these prisoners hold dual nationalities, one of Iran and one of developed countries such as U.S. and European countries.

Washington also requires the cooperation of Tehran in the case of Robert Levinson, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, missing in Iran since 2007.

Morello reported from Washington.
