The alarm was raised at Friedrich Ebert School in Esslingen, near Stuttgart this morning with students initially told to barricade themselves in their classrooms.

A man was arrested in the town but was released after police realised they were holding the wrong person.

Witnesses told police they had seen a firearm tucked in the teenager's waistband. He probably fled on a motor bike, they later tweeted.

A GUNMAN has reportedly stormed a German school sparking panic and causing police to put the area on lockdown.

Police described the suspect as "male, about 180 cm tall, slim, (wearing a) red t-shirt, blue jeans, camouflage cap worn backwards, a three-day beard, reading glasses, dark complexion".

Parents were told not go to the school, with cops saying pupils would be escorted out by officers once the all clear was given, Bild reports.

Police spokesman Bjoern Reusch said the suspect didn't use his weapon and nobody was hurt when he briefly showed up inside the school building in Esslingen, near Stuttgart.
