Second-Born Kids Are Much More Mischievous Than Their Siblings

According to the study Birth Order and Delinquency and written about here on WTEN's website: Evidence from Denmark and Florida, families with two or more children, second-born boys are 20 to 40 percent more likely to be disciplined in school and enter the criminal justice system compared to first-born boys even when compared to other siblings. The first-born child is usually the smartest, the second or middle child tends to be forgotten and the baby of the family - well they are the baby.

Holy crap! Does this mean that the "curse of the second-born child" is true? Doyle and his colleagues say that second-borns (particularly boys) are inclined to be more rebellious than their older siblings.

Well, that's pretty much the conclusion that researchers from a study led by MIT economist Joseph Doyle came to after poring over data from thousands of sets of brothers from Denmark and Florida.

A new study finds second-born children are more likely to cause trouble and commit crimes.

First-born children often get undivided attention from their parents, while their younger siblings have to share.

"The firstborn has role models, who are adults". And the second, later-born children have role models who are slightly irrational 2-year-olds, you know, their older siblings.

"Both the parental investments are different, and the sibling influences probably contribute to these differences we see in the labour market and what we find in delinquency. It's just very hard to separate those two things because they happen at the same time".
