Atletico de Kolkata has announced that it has appointed former Manchester United and England forward Teddy Sheringham as its head coach for the forthcoming season.

"Our endeavour to retain expertise and map out a compact team structure has been enhanced with Sheringham joining the team this season".

"One of the top goal scorers and an exceptional player himself I am hopeful Teddy will bring his fine planning skills to lead the way for ATK", he said in a statement. The pinacle of Sheringham's long career as a player came in 1999 when he scored the equaliser for Manchester United in their win over Bayern Munich in the final of the UEFA Champions League that year.

The 51-year-old, who won three Premier League titles and the Champions League with the Red Devils, most recently managed League Two side Stevenage.

The Premier League and Champions League victor took a short break following the end of his playing career, before he was appointed as West Hams striking coach during Sam Allardyce's final season at the club. However, he was sacked in February 2016 after a run of poor results.

He was the attacking play coach at West Ham United during the 2014-15 season but parted ways with the London outfit in May 2015 to take over English fourth division side Stevenage.
