Updates on Tottenham's attempts to sign Everton's Ross Barkley

The Everton player is said to be on Tottenham Hotspur's radar but he is allegedly asking for £140,000 a week. Everton would rather cash in on Barkley now than risk losing him for training compensation next summer.

Spurs are keen on signing Barkley, and have been for months now.

The 23-year-old ticks plenty of boxes for Mauricio Pochettino.

The England global, who scored five goals in his 36 Premier League appearances last season, has always been linked with a move to Tottenham, but Everton are reported to be demanding £50million for the 23-year-old.

Given how strong Spurs' starting XI is, it is hard to work out exactly where Barkley would fit in if he joined but perhaps Pochettino has plans to move him into a similar role to that now occupied by Mousa Dembele.

The Sunday Mirror report that having sold Walker, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will now turn his attentions to Ross Barkley.

Spurs are not going to pay £50m for Barkley.

Barkley has been highly-rated ever since bursting onto the scene during the 2013-14 Premier League season but he has been accused of inconsistency over the past few years and has failed to make any real impact with the England national team.

Tottenham would like to close the deal before this coming Wednesday, when they fly to the U.S. for their pre-season tour.

The Toffees are also trying to push through a move for Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson.

£50 million is an astronomical fee for any player of Barkley's quality, especially given that there is only one year left on his current deal.

Barkley's reluctance to put pen to paper on a new contract leaves him open to depart as a free agent next summer, with boss Ronald Koeman confessing earlier this week that the situation remains unclear.
