It is understood that the two Premier League clubs have been far away from agreeing a deal for the English playmaker and that Everton's £50million valuation has been viewed as "unrealistic" by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Having opted not to pen a new deal with Everton, despite an offer of a contract worth £100,000-a-week on the table, it's clear that Barkley intends on moving on this summer but there is seemingly a long way to go between what Everton want and what Tottenham will offer.

It is believed that Everton will compromise a deal "in the coming weeks" with Spurs after already signing attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen from Ajax.

Will Spurs sign Ross Barkley?

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to bring in any new signings in the summer window, but has seen Kyle Walker, Clinton N'Jie and Federico Fazio all leave.

Barkley made 39 appearances last term for the Toffees, scoring six goals and providing nine assists in all competitions.

The 23-year-old ticks plenty of boxes for Mauricio Pochettino. He has a knack of getting the best out of his players and Barkley certainly still has more potential to fulfil.

The Toffees know the clock is ticking on Spurs deadline of next Wednesday when they depart for their pre-season tour of the United States and will test Levy's nerve and hold out for what they want.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the England worldwide over the last few weeks.
