The soirée was held Saturday at the Ritz Charles event center in Carmel, Indiana, and Cummins was there to welcome her guests on the day that was supposed to be her wedding.

"It was really devastating", Cummins, a doctoral student in pharmacy at Purdue University, told the newspaper.

An American woman whose US$30,000 wedding was cancelled has hosted a banquet for the homeless rather than let it all go to waste, according to a the Indystar.

She told the Indy Star: "It was really devastating, I called everyone, cancelled, apologised, cried, called vendors, cried some more and then I started feeling really sick about just throwing away all the food I ordered for the reception".

So she talked to the hotel and, after making some changes, contacted homeless shelters in the area.

On the menu were chicken breast with artichokes, bourbon-glazed meatballs, roasted garlic bruschetta and, of course, wedding cake.

Speaking to the local newspaper Indy Star, Cummins said she and her fiancée mutually chose to call off their wedding a week ago. "I suspect having the chance to experience a delicious meal with your family in a handsome space like the Ritz Charles will be very special for them".

Sarah partnered with the Ritz Charles' wedding planner to organize the event, who them arranged for her guests to be picked up via bus.

The onetime bride-to-be said she doesn't feel particularly generous. Many residents and local businesses also wanted to lend support so they donated suits for the guests.

Her ex-fiance is devastated himself, reeling from his mother's recent death and the cancellation of the wedding.

One of the attendees, Charlie Allen, said: 'I didn't have a sport coat.

"I will, at least, have some kind of happy memory to pull from", Cummins said. "I've worked so many weekends and so much overtime to pay for this, I wanted to make sure it would be the flawless wedding", Cummins told the IndyStar. I think I look pretty nice in it.

After hosting the event, Cummins reportedly left on her honeymoon to the Dominican Republic.
