Hyundai i30 Fastback takes the'BORING out of the C-Segment

Hyundai has unveiled its first hot-hatch, the i30N, and debuted its new high performance N brand.

The new Hyundai i30 Fastback is set for launch early in 2018 in Europe, where it is aimed at rivaling the likes of the Audi A3 Saloon and the Mazda 3 Fastback.

The "N" stands for Namyang, Hyundai's global R&D centre in Korea, where the idea was born, and for the Nurburgring, home to Hyundai's European test centre, where the N line-up was further developed and tested. Compared to the five-door version, the i30 N is 4 mm lower with 18-inch wheels and 8 mm lower with 19-inch wheels.

If that is not exciting enough, the i30 N will not be making its debut alone as the auto is confirmed to get accompanied with the i30 Fastback. At the rear, the triangular third brake light in the new glossy black spoiler and the double muffler exhaust underline the sporty stance of this hatchback.

Powering the Hyundai i30 Fastback will be a choice of either a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine making 118bhp or a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine producing 138bhp. Depending on which is chosen, a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch transmission can be specified. The manufacturer announces a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. There's also optional Qi wireless smartphone charging.

Additionally, the driver can select the rev-matching button on the steering wheel to increase the revs on the engine when shifting from a higher to a lower gear, while the car's Launch Control helps to launch the vehicle as fast as easy possible by controlling engine torque. Launch control can be effectively used in N drive mode with ESP switched off.

But what was Hyundai's thinking when it came to the i30 N? The i30 Fastback is also 115mm longer than the hatch, which also contributes to a sleeker profile. Customers will get to choose from 12 exterior colours. It has an annual production capacity of 350,000 cars.
