Myanmar plane crashed due to 'bad weather': Military

BAD weather caused a Myanmar military plane to crash last month with 122 people on board, state media reported on Wednesday, in one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the country's history.

On July 7, the Chinese-made Y8-200F cargo plane was carrying 124 people, including 17 children, when it crashed into the Andaman Sea during a weekly flight to Yangon from the coastal town of Myeik in southern Tanintharyi region.

Communication with the flight was lost half an hour into the short, routine trip.

After studying black box data, investigators decided the crash was "not from any act of sabotage, explosion or engine failure".

It is monsoon season in Myanmar but there were no reports of major stormy weather in the area at the time. The adverse weather "caused the plane to stall, or lose the ability to attain lift, resulting in a spin, also known as a nose dive".

Gerry Soejatman, an independent aviation expert based in Jakarta, said storms high up in the atmosphere that are not visible from the ground can cause ice to form on wings or in engine intakes.

It remains unclear why the pilot flew into the storm, given that weather radar normally allows such clouds to be avoided.

The flight data recorder (Black Box) and CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) were recovered in retrieved tail of the missing plane during the search and rescue operations.
