Scottish MP shocks colleagues by wearing national team's football shirt in Commons

SNP MP Hannah Bardell was spotted wearing a Scotland football top in the House of Commons today, ahead of the Scotland women's national team making their major tournament debut.

Ms Bardell - who this morning took part in the MP and media sports day - then asked a question about public sector jobs in West Lothian.

She initially covered it up with a red flowery jacket, before taking the jacket off again.

She told the Commons her choice of clothes was to show support for Scotland's ladies team - which is playing England in the Women's European Championships tonight. "Their career has obivously done better in football than mine".

There are no firm rules on what MPs are expected to wear, but the Parliament's "Rules of behaviour and courtesies in the House" (PDF) says their dress should "demonstrate respect for the House and for its central position in the life of the nation".

It comes after a row erupted over whether MPs should be forced to wear ties in the Commons, after Liberal Democrat Tom Brake was called out for not wearing one.

Previously, MPs have been disciplined by the Speaker for using their clothing to send a message to TV viewers.
