John Boyega on lack of diversity in film: 'We can ruffle some feathers' by casting more actors of color

Boyega, whose breakout role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens propelled him to fame, came forward about Hollywood's need for more actors of color in his interview - a topic he knows well, given that he was the first black main character in the Star Wars franchise and his casting caused a stir among less progressive fans. "I ain't paying money to always see one type of person on-screen".

Boyega, who plays Finn in the Star Wars films, said: "There are no black people on Game of Thrones".

'You see different people from different cultures every day, ' he told GQ magazine. 'Even if you're a racist, you have to live with that. We can ruffle up some feathers!'

Since season 2 of the HBO flagship show, actress Nathalie Emmanuel has portrayed Missandei, close advisor and friend to Daenerys Targaryen, and actor Jacob Anderson has portrayed the leader of the Unsullied, Grey Worm.

Martin responded saying: "Westeros around 300 AC is nowhere near as diverse as 21st century America, of course... but with that being said, I do have some "characters of color" who will have somewhat larger roles in WINDS OF WINTER". Admittedly, these are secondary and tertiary characters, though not without importance. "Of course, I am talking about the books here, and you are talking about the show, which is a thing apart". I do think HBO and David and Dan are doing what they can to promote diversity as well, as witness the casting of Areo Hotah, which you mention.

Boyega has previously stated that he wants to make a movie in Nigeria.

Speaking ahead of the film's release to Sirius XM Radio, he said that it's more important he concentrate on 'the true Star Wars fans who are just ready to see a good movie despite my gorgeous chocolate skin'.
