"The government signed a $2.39 million lease to rent a 3,475 sq. ft. space in the building for the military from April. 11, 2017 to September 30, 2018, almost 18 months in total, according to lease documents that The Wall Street Journal obtained through a freedom of information request", The Wall Street Journal reports.

The Government Services Agency (GSA) is the agency responsible for managing federal government office space leases and said that the space in Trump Tower is actually owned by an individual not affiliated with the Trump Organisation.

The lease rate being paid by the military is far above the typical rate for such a space, making it one of the most costly real estate rentals in Manhattan, the Wall Street Journal reported. If true, it would mean the lease money may not benefit Mr Trump directly.

"To alleviate your principal concern (i.e. that the president of the United States might financially benefit from the lease effort), please know that this residential space is privately owned and that lease negotiations have been with the owner's representatives only", acting Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics James MacStravic wrote in a March 3 letter to Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA).

The federal government also had to pay an additional $23 million to protect First Lady Melania Trump when she and son Barron were still residing in Trump Tower.

The White House Military Office is a part of the USA military that provides vital services that are required by law to be near the president at all times, including the so-called "nuclear football". "The military also ensures that the so-called nuclear football-the briefcase that allows the president to authorize a nuclear attack-accompanies the commander in chief during his travels".

Objections had been raised by Democrats about leasing the space in Trump Tower, but a Pentagon spokesperson said: "The space is necessary for the personnel and equipment who will support the [president] at his residence in the building".
