Dr Mahathir challenges PM to attend 1MDB meet

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should clarify his support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the man he sacked from the government and UMNO in 1998, for alleged sodomy.

"Is Dr Mahathir having regrets for calling Anwar a sodomiser?"

Saari, a longtime Anwar supporter who has also been detained twice under the Internal Security Act when Mahathir was prime minister said that the meeting titled "Otai Refomis di simpangan" might end with his resignation if members can not accept Mahathir as the coalition chairman. "My role is to breach the gap and to convince them that the aim is to win the general election", Saari revealed.

Numerous group's members were detained by the Malaysian authorities in the security crackdown that ensued following the sacking of Anwar in 1998.

It is understood that the group's secretary Razak Ismail has threatened to resign and join Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), reported The Star.

Saari, who was twice held under the Internal Security Act under Dr Mahathir, is reportedly attempting to organise talks with the malcontents on Sunday to try and overcome their animosity towards Dr Mahathir, whom they still blame for the country's current state.

"The story is not so lovely if Anwar has to become PM only by cooperating with Mahathir".

Earlier this month, Otai Reformis had gone public with a list of demand and conditions that have to be met by Mahathir to gain their support.

Dr Mahathir was made chairman of Pakatan Harapan last week, and while it had not been immediately clear if he was the most senior leader in the hierarchy, the former prime minister yesterday resolved this by unilaterally declaring himself its "top dog".

The 92-year-old has also positioned himself as the most likely candidate to be PH's prime minister if it wins federal power, while promising to facilitate Anwar's release and possibly elevation to the position later.
