Turkey Changes Justice, Defense Ministers in Cabinet Shuffle

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sven Mikser meeting

Erdogan had complained of a "fatigue" within the ruling party, speaking of a need for rejuvenation.

Yildirim announced a cabinet reshuffle, replacing or swapping 11 ministers in the 26-member council of ministers.

Binali Yildirim named legislator Abdulhamit Gul as the new justice minister and former deputy prime minister Nurettin Canikli as the defence minister.

Former Justice and Defense Ministers, Bekir Bozdag and Fikri Isik, came under the police's radar after the failed state coup attempt from 2016 attributed to Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and their dismissal was something that everyone has predicted.

Ministries who didn't end up with a new leader were those of Economy, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Interior and European Affairs. Ala was replaced with Süleyman Soylu, labor and social security minister at the time, and Mehmet Müezzinoğlu was appointed for Soylu's former post.

Yildirim made the announcement following a previously unannounced meeting with Erdogan.

The Turkish president's powers were significantly increased after the April 16 referendum in which over 51 percent of voters supported proposed constitutional amendments that expanded presidential powers over the legislature and the judiciary. Erdogan was re-elected chairman of the ruling party in an extraordinary congress on May 21.

Erdogan co-founded the Justice and Development Party in 2001 and led it for more than a decade until he was elected president in 2014.
