'Supergirl' Season 3 Trailer Teases Dark Days to Come for Kara Danvers

When Supergirl's first season aired on CBS, the network hemmed and hawed until the eleventh hour about whether or not the show would see a renewal.

Series co-creator Ali Adler will be leaving as showrunner, with Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner stepping up to take her place, alongside series co-creator Andrew Kreisberg. Although she was not obligated to continue, Flockhart decided not to leave the show completely.

"The first two seasons, she's trying to... figure out her identity", Benoist said, describing Kara as trying to strike a balance between Supergirl and her alter ego Kara Danvers.

Supergirl returns October 9 on the CW. The DC villain's big plans for National City instantly put him at odds with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). Carl Lumbly will appear as J'onn J'onzz's father. Actor Lumbly is no stranger to the J'onzz family, as he's voiced the Martian Manhunter on the Justice League animated series.

Emma Tremblay (Elysium, The Judge, The Giver, Wayward Pines) plays Ruby, a smart, independently minded National City kid who's fascinated by Supergirl and ends up in jeopardy because of it.

Grobglas plays DC baddie Psi, a psychic who uses people's minds against them. "When we pick up on Season 3, the scale is leaning very heavily on Supergirl". For now, it appears that she will remain a regular. "She doesn't want to kill everyone she sees, she also doesn't want to rule the earth". Unfortunately, her obsession with "Supergirl" will lead to a near-death experience.

The rest of the trailer does have a few noteworthy moments, including the first look at ex-Smallville alum Erica Durance who will be playing Kara's late Kryptonian mom Alura Zor-El.

As for James, Queller said, "He's going to have a new love interest". We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. But they're so darn adorable when they're doing it, so we can't even be mad.

Moreover, the sneak peek features the debut of Reign (played by Odette Annable).

Last year, the delightful cast of Supergirl surprised MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con with an incredible recap of Season 1 - in song. According to Deadline, she'll have a different look from her comics version.

Reign was created by Michael Green (current co-showrunner on American Gods on Starz, and who worked on the Logan screenplay), Mike Johnson, and Mahmud Asrar.
