Ben & Jerry's ice cream

Traces of a controversial chemical have been found in several varieties of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Per The New York Times, an average adult would have to eat 290,000 servings of ice cream a day to hit the unsafe zone.

The amount of chemicals found in the ice cream is still far below risky levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Michalak said in the Times article that none of its plant-based ingredients come from a genetically engineered crops like corn or soy, where glyphosate is used in production. Cherry Garcia was the only flavor to test negative for the herbicide.

OCA is calling for Ben & Jerry's, a Vermont-based subsidiary of Unilever, to begin an immediate transition to using only organic ingredients, including milk, in its products or face a national and worldwide consumer boycott.

Additionally, the OCA says reports published by Regeneration Vermont reveal that Ben & Jerry's suppliers-and Vermont and US (non-organic) dairy farmers in general, "have gone backwards, rather than forward over the past 15 years in terms of environment sustainability, food safety, and nutrition and greenhouse gas pollution".

A report published January 2017, in the journal Nature, linked low doses of glyphosate to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, suggesting that there is no "safe" level of glyphosate despite otherwise indicated by regulatory agencies.

"Obviously I'm not putting kimchi in ice cream, but something fermented, with a little funk to it, a little twist, that you could marry with something sweet", says Fredette, who has been part of the company's research and development team for more than 20 years.

Ben & Jerry's works to ensure that all its ingredients do not include genetically modified organisms, according to Rob Michalak, global director of social mission for the company. "Maybe it's from something that's not even in our supply chain, and so we're missing it".

GMOs, specifically glyphosate, have been a hot-button issue for consumers in recent years.

The company has not responded to a request for comment.

The company, which was originally founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1978, was acquired by Unilever, in 2001, for $326 million.
