Vikings signing Everson Griffen to extension

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen won't leave Minnesota any time soon.

Griffen was the best defensive linemen due for a new contract, yet his new deal only places him as the No. 6 highest paid player at his position, via Spotrac. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs, defensive end Danielle Hunter, nose tackle Linval Joseph and linebackers Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks also have contracts that are set to come up after the 2018 season.

"I'm excited, man", Griffen said of his new deal after reporting to training camp at Minnesota State, Mankato.

In the last three seasons, Griffen has posted 109 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in 47 games. It was the second time in three seasons that he not only played, but started in all 16 games.

The extension runs through 2022 and contains $34 million in guaranteed monies.

"We'll continue to work and monitor other potential extensions", he said. The Vikings have been trying to hammer out a deal with him, too, so it could happen in the coming days.

"This means I'm a Viking for life", said Griffen, 29. "I know we have some significant contracts and significant young players coming up, so to get, I wouldn't say ahead of the curve, but to get some of this out of the way now, it is going to give a lot more flexibility as we go forward into next year and future years".

Everson Griffen will be staying in Minnesota a lot longer. "My appreciation's high; I appreciate each day I step on the football field, I appreciate the coaching staff, the ownership, the organization". "Our philosophy has always been try to draft well and develop those guys and keep those guys together, because if you can keep that nucleus together, I think it gives you an opportunity to compete and win every year".
