The Patriots defensive end is expected to announce his retirement from the National Football League at a news conference Sunday afternoon, sources told the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe and ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

A news conference is scheduled at Gillette Stadium for 12:15 p.m. but Patriots officials have not said what it was about.

Ninkovich will the be second Patriot to announce his retirement this year.

Ninkovich had missed the first three days of training camp for what the Patriots called "personal reasons". After a stint with the Dolphins and again with the Saints, he landed in New England in 2009.

Reiss says Ninkovich has been considering retirement, and that "i$3 t would be a surprise" if more clarity regarding his situation didn't come "within the next 24 hours or so".

Ninkovich, 33, compiled 460 tackles, 46 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and 5 interceptions in 11 seasons. The candidates to fill the role now are newcomer Kony Ealy, third-year pro Geneo Grissom and 2017 draft picks Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise.
