'American Gods' Star Ian McShane Joins David Harbour in 'Hellboy' Reboot

Professor Broom has traditionally been a bookish, lean man who has been the brainy counterpart to the more brash Hellboy and the soldiers who often accompany him on missions. They've got Neil Marshall (The Descent) directing with David Harbour (Stranger Things) taking over the lead role of paranormal investigator Hellboy. Personally, I think Doug Jones was absolutely ideal at playing Abe, but even with his natural ability to play otherworldly characters, director Neil Marshall might want to cast someone else in the role to make sure to everyone that this movie is in fact, a reboot. McShane can pull off the tired gentleman no sweat, but his character type is generally much gruffer and hypermasculine than Professor Broom has previously been depicted.

Ian McShane can now be seen playing Mr.Wednesday in the television adaptation of American Gods, but it looks like he will be moving back to the big screen for his next role.

The part of Professor Broom was originally brought to life by the late John Hurt in the Ron Perlman movies "Hellboy" and "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army".

The creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, announced earlier this year that the reboot will have a hard R-rating, allowing it to capture the world of the Hellboy comics in ways the prior two films could not.

As for the upcoming movie's plot, there isn't much information other than Hollywood Reporter's claim that demon-spawn hero will square off against a "medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy mankind".

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing along with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment. McShane, with his ability to balance gravitas, affability, and malice, may lend well to Marshall's take on Hellboy. The project is expecting to start filming next month in the United Kingdom and Bulgaria. No release date has yet been confirmed.
