Mamata condoles death of former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev

I knew him for many, many years.

Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital here in in Silchar, Assam following kidney and other ailments.

Modi said: "Saddened. (Dev) was veteran political leader who worked extensively for welfare of people".

He was 83 and is survived by wife Bithika Dev, a former legislator and four daughters including present Congress MP Sushmita Dev. He was ailing for long and admitted recently to a private hospital after he developed pneumonia.

The veteran Congress leader was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980 from Silchar constituency.

She further expressed her solidarity with his family and supporters, particularly Congress MP Sushmita Dev.

A seven-time parliamentarian, Santosh Mohan Dev was believed to be one of the most trusted ministers of Rajiv Gandhi. He represented Silchar five times and Tripura twice.

He was appointed as Heavy Industry Minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA-I government. He also served as Minister of State (MoS) for Communications in 1986-88 and as the Minister of State for Home from 1988 to 1989.

He has the rare distinction of being elected from two different states. He was given independent charge of the Steel Ministry in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government in 1991.
