M - Afghan security forces battled gunmen following a suicide attack outside the Iraqi embassy in the capital, Kabul.

Although there has been no confirmation of direct planning links with the main ISIL movement in Iraq and Syria, the attack, just three weeks after the recapture of Mosul, underlines fears of a spillover into Afghanistan from fighting in Syria and Iraq.

The MoI said that "one policeman was wounded in the attack".

"This attack shows complete contempt for human life, as well as the global law created to protect diplomats", said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan.

Two Afghan embassy employees were killed, and three people, including a police officer, were injured, a spokesperson told the BBC.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has strongly condemned the attack on the embassy of Iraq, calling it a move in contrast to the worldwide norms and values.

Iraq's foreign ministry said following Daesh's defeat in Iraq, Baghdad has urged a number of countries to put more security measures in place to safeguard Iraqi embassies.

"I strongly condemns the attack against the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Kabul today".

He also expressed his solidarity with the people and the government of Afghanistan, said Dujarric. "Attacks against diplomatic facilities and staff are against the principles of global law". The attacks have fueled fears that militants in Afghanistan are trying bring in the kind of sectarian brutality seen in the Middle East. "[ISIL] seeks only to destroy a peaceful future for the people of Afghanistan".
